The Limits of Our First Tools
When we begin our careers working with data, we often start with familiar tools. For many of us, that tool was Excel. It felt powerful at first, but we soon found its limits when faced with larger, more complex tasks.
We remember the frustration of waiting for a complex Macro to run, hoping it wouldn’t crash. The move to a programming language like Python felt like a necessary next step, opening up a world of automation and scale that spreadsheets simply couldn’t offer. This transition is a common one for professionals we meet in our Python courses in New Zealand.
Similarly, we experienced a learning curve with visualisation tools. When we first adopted Power BI, we assumed it would be a direct replacement for Excel’s reporting functions. We quickly realised that while it is incredibly powerful for dashboards, certain tasks like pivoting massive tables required a completely different approach than the one we were used to.
It’s About Confidence, Not Complexity
These challenges are not just technical frustrations. They fundamentally affect our confidence in the information we produce and the decisions that are made from it.
When a process is slow, manual, or prone to breaking, we spend our time fixing it instead of analysing the results. This is a critical issue for managers and business leaders who rely on timely, accurate data but are not data specialists themselves. The goal should always be to build systems that produce reliable insights, freeing us up to ask better questions.

A common belief is that automation’s main purpose is to make things faster. While speed is a great benefit, the true value of good automation is reliability.
A script that runs in one minute but fails silently 10% of the time is far more dangerous than one that takes five minutes but includes robust error handling. Our work in data consultancy in Auckland often involves shifting this focus. We help teams build processes that don’t just run fast, but run correctly every time, alerting us when something is wrong.
A Shift in Thinking
The most practical change we can make is to shift our mindset from being tool-focused to being process-focused. Instead of asking “What tool can do this?”, we should be asking, “What makes this process trustworthy and repeatable?”
This means thinking about potential points of failure from the beginning. It involves building in checks and data validation, even if it feels slower at first. A dependable process is always more valuable than a quick but fragile one.
